I took my Garand out of the case today. I still can't believe how beautiful that rifle is. I have created a National Match shooter of rare and special beauty and accuracy; with handloads the rifle goes into 3/4" @ 100 yards. Not bad for a 62 year-old autoloading .30 cal rifle!
This rifle doesn't simply represent a great National Match piece, or a cool benchrest toy, or the Armchair Commando's prize posession, but rather it is an icon and a reminder to me of the terrible struggle that was won not by Nazi Supermen or Soldiers of the Empire of Japan, but by dog-tired plumbers from Detroit, skinny Jewish kids from the Bronx, corn-fed boys from Indiana, and enterprising scientists at the University of Chicago.
It is a living testament to their struggle, the struggle of the Citizen Soldiers of this Nation against totalitarianism in WWII, in our current war, and in wars past. It is a living signpost that reminds us that America is a country that is slow to anger, quick to forgive, suspicious of intolerance and unwilling to be guided by religious zealotry, and that she is the best place in the world to make your voice heard, to work for a successful life and to simply be free. It also serves as a dark reminder of both the cost of freedom and the price extracted from its enemies - fuck with us and you will see the business end of this rifle, Osama.
