Just A Question For The Left

This is just a question for you Leftists out there that are cruisin' the Blogosphere: What, exactly, is all the hype about abortion? Why do you guys get so worked up and in a lather over, anyhow? You know that's a child, not a choice, right?

What I'm really after is, what does the American Left gain by being legally-enabled to murder a child? Doesn't it smack of "non-inclusiveness," (after all, being included in the pool of the Living is where "inclusiveness" truly begins), a rejection of "Diversity," a quintessential lack of concern for the welfare of "The Children," who must be saved at every opportunity - except for the nine months prior to their birth?

What am I missing here? Surely, you folks won't come at me with that old saw about "a woman's right to choose," equating somebody's "choice" of murdering/not-murdering a defenseless human being with the selection of a meal off the value menu at Mickey D's, right?

You guys do know that if you leave "it" alone, in nine months, a perfectly viable OTHER HUMAN BEING will pop out of that thing, right? A human that will have the same hopes, dreams, and challenges you have faced? You guys sure you want to send this opportunity literally down the tubes?

I think there are times when an abortion may be an appropriate option, as well as many times when it is inappropriate. I don't like abortion, but I guess I feel that making it illegal would fail to take situations where it would be an appropriate option into account.

That's a reasonable enough conclusion - but you let slip the question about the POLITICS of abortion. Why do the Left and the Right hold such unpredictable views on the topic?

In my book, the American Left should revile abortion because it has spent the last century bravely shoring up the efforts of the downtrodden, the workers, and the minorites to become recognized as equals in this society.

The American Right should like the idea that Big .Gov needs to keep its dirty fingers off of personal business and personal choices - laissez-faire is supposed to be the order of the day. They're constructionists, remember? Individual rights are to be recognized as natural and unalienable, so why do Conservatives want to shove a governemntally-operated anti-abortion scheme at you?

underwhelmed has hit the nail on the head: why, when they are supposed to want to minimize the amount of control that the goverment has over daily lives of citizens, do the conservatives insist so strongly on having total control over this aspect of a woman's life? an interesting point is also made about the liberal point of view, which i don't entirely disagree with and is definitely food for thought.

Thanks for recognizing my own cognitive dissonance.

I really am confused about the central question. I tend towards "preserving the child" because I'm a conservative, but the libertarian side of me says, "get out of my freakin' business! My body! Keep your damned laws off!"

Perhaps, when I move on to the next portion of my existence, I will acquire enough wisdom to have an answer for the question.
